The essay
Risk is a fun board game, but it makes for a lousy foreign policy. Yet that’s pretty much the Trump Doctrine. Russia gets Europe (sorry Ukraine). China gets Asia (too bad, Taiwan). And the United States gets the Western Hemisphere (which includes Greenland. Oh joy!).
That’s how Trump seems to want it. Each major power (or in Russia’s case, former-major power) gets its own sphere of influence. Germany, Italy and Japan took this approach in World War II when they signed the Tripartite Pact in 1940. That agreement is better known as the Axis Pact.
History doesn’t repeat itself, but it sure echoes loudly. This time around the agreement will be known in the US as the Trump Pact. Elsewhere it will be referred to as a disaster of global proportions.
