The essay
It takes a great sinner to be as performatively righteously religious as America’s Secretary of the Undefensible. Hegseth hasn’t blurred the line between religion and government, he’s bombed it away. But I suppose when you lack intelligence, knowledge, and judgment, your only choice is to wrap yourself in holy artifice. Or as H. L. Mencken said, “God is the immemorial refuge of the incompetent, the helpless, the miserable."
Hegseth is certainly a fool, but hey, at least he’s an arrogant one. It takes a lot of arrogance to say you know God’s will. One might even call it blasphemous. Perhaps that’s why it often seems those who are the least religious are the ones who invoke it the most.
Sorry, Wrong Number notes that even if Hegseth is hearing voices or feeling the spirit, he probably got the connection wrong. And since I’ve included Bugs Bunny in a number of Sketchiers, I thought it was time to bring out another OG hero. You’ll be seeing more of Bullwinkle (and his friend, Rocky) in future strips. Personally, I can’t wait.
