The essay
The poem “First they came …” was written by Martin Niemöller, a German Lutheran pastor, in 1946 as a confession and as poetry. In the 1970s it was a bit of a cultural touchstone in the U.S. and hasn’t gone away, unfortunately, in the past 50+ years.
Nicolás Maduro is a bad man. Venezuela is better off with him gone. Trump’s attack on the country was wrong and likely illegal, although some will look the other way because Maduro is a bad man. Which then makes it easier for Trump to sic the military on his next target. I don’t really think it will be Greenland, but there’s a non-zero possibility it will be. And if Greenland isn’t next, it could be the one after that. Or the one after that.
Isn’t that a pleasant thought?
