A Reporter's Dream

Trump doesn’t like women who challenge him. If they’re subservient sycophants who do his bidding, he’ll make them Attorney General or the like. But women who stand up to him? That damages his too tender psyche in bizarre ways.

The job of journalists is to challenge him. And while Trump goes after male reporters, he’s especially insulting when it’s a woman. It would be nice if reporters joined in solidarity against this behavior. It won’t happen, but hey, we can dream.

A Reporter’s Dream describes what I’m guessing every legitimate journalist wishes they could say when Trump goes on another insult bender. They’re restrained by custom, professionalism, and the love of a regular paycheck, but you know they want to. The first one who cracks speaks up may very well get a Pulitzer and get arrested. But hey, they might also get a paying gig on MS NOW. Or at least a big following on Substack.

For those who enjoy the “Making of a Sketchier” comments I sometimes add, I had fun figuring out how to convey a dream in a rather static cartoon structure. It’s not like I could do the shimmering images or rapidly spinning pinwheels that movies have been using to signal “what follows is a dream” since the dawn of shimmering images (and maybe of pinwheels).

Since Sketchier is black & white, doing a color overlay of the dream panel—and extending the color beyond the panel—seemed like a nice solution. And it was only while writing this that I realized I stole this “real life in black & white; dream in color” idea from The Wizard of Oz. Oh my.
