Day 1 Promises

The Essay

Trump loves to make promises. He just doesn’t feel the need to keep them. During the 2024 campaign he promised to end the war in Ukraine and start to bring down prices and inflation. He accomplished neither. And he won’t. Neither of these objectives is in his wheelhouse.

What Trump is good at is undermining democracy, harming our allies while benefiting our enemies, enriching himself and his family, lying, and cheating at golf. So really, is he wrong to have promised things we knew he wouldn’t do? Or are 49.8% of 2024 voters wrong to have believed him?

Day 1 Promises recognizes that there’s another way of looking at it. Trump never specified which Day 1 he was referring to. And does anyone really believe that if he can figure out a way to get a third term, he won’t take it? And given his penchant for (what he considers) positive thinking, if there’s a will, there’s a way. Or at least there’s a coup.
