The essay
On his return trip from China, Trump was asked if he spoke with Chinese President Xi about Taiwan. Trump told reporters, “We discussed the Taiwan, the whole thing with the arm sales, in great detail, actually, and I'll be making decisions, but you know, I think the last thing we need right now is a war that's 9,500 miles away.”
So he’s off by 1,500 miles. That’s not surprising. What’s bizarre is that this is a president who started a war far closer and has yet to give a coherent, consistent, and credible explanation of why he did. The man’s cluelessness is astounding. If there were a Nobel Prize for Lack of Self-Awareness, they’d retire it in his honor.
The Last Thing We Need could have gone several directions. I chose one that allowed me to use the signpost I’d created with ChatGPT. The White House would change the actual miles to Taiwan to match whatever Trump said it was, so that touch was my contribution to the artistic endeavor. All of which is to say, I enjoyed the making of this strip. And I hope you enjoyed reading it.
