It’s not easy being elected to Congress. Raising money is degrading. There’s a lot of door knocking, speaking at small events, putting up with being insulted, and yeah, there’s fun stuff, too. But it’s hard work.

In the not too distant past, however, the pain was worth it. Congress was a co-equal branch of government. Issues were debated. Committee meetings were substantive, not only for show. There was a chance to make a difference.

Spinal Tapped, however, is a strip for a different time. It reflects today’s reality when candidates go through the pain so they can be sworn in as a cog in Team Red or Blue. When campaigns are not about electing representatives, but helping someone move up in the cult.

Sure, this dynamic isn’t brand new, but it’s far more intense now. And yes, both parties sink to this new level. It is Republicans, however, who have taken the “party as cult” to new highs. They have surrendered their integrity and constitutional responsibilities on the altar of a demented narcissist who demands 100% loyalty and gives back very little in return. That’s a level of spinelessness that exceeds anything happening across the aisle.
