The essay
When a reporter asked Trump about Van Dyke’s arrest for using information about a dangerous mission to make well-timed bets on Polymarket, he commented that it was like “Pete Rose betting on his own team.” His mind (such as it is) didn’t consider the risk this betting posed to the troops conducting the raid. Instead, his first thoughts were about a baseball player barred from the sport for life after betting on his team to win. To be fair, Trump added that he wasn’t happy with federal employees betting on prediction markets. But, as The Recruit imagines, he no doubt admired Van Dyke for initiative nonetheless.
Grift is the defining attribute of the Trump Administration. He and his family have set a high bar: over $2 billion raked in since his election last November. And Trump’s cronies have enriched themselves by millions, if not billions, more. Which means if Van Dyke can show he’s loyal to Trump, he can expect a pardon and a cushy job in the Administration. Rumor has it there may be openings at the FBI and Department of Defense soon.
