The essay
There’s a kind of logic to what’s going on. Trump, his family, and friends are collecting billions of dollars through graft, gifts, and so-called investments. There’s so much loose money sloshing around that everyone gets to play, if you’re on the right team. The price of admission? Dignity. Integrity. Your soul. All you need to do is go along and know when to look the other way.
There used to be Republicans worthy of respect in Washington. Senators like Howard Baker, Nancy Kassebaum, Richard Lugar. One could make a case for John McCain and Mitt Romney. But of current members of Congress? When Susan “MAGA When It Counts” Collins and Lisa Murkowski are among the best the GOP can offer, they’re not offering much.
The Shame Wears Off recognizes that shame is no longer a deterrent for Republicans in Washington. They look the other way. They grab what they can. They get their moment on Fox News. They may feel The Shame Wears Off, but the rest of us knows it doesn’t. And so does history.
