Trump signed an executive order promising to send armed military troops to America’s cities whether local and state officials ask for them or not. Not because there are riots in the street, but because Trump wants to. Sure, he’ll cite crime rates, but that’s a small fig leaf (fortunately, that’s the only size he needs).

How do we know? First tell: Trump says it’s about crime. Trump lies. Ergo, it’s not about crime.

Second tell: the violent crime rate is higher in Palm Beach County (home of Mar-a-Lago) than it is in D.C., where he’s sent troops and New York City, where I’m guessing he will soon. Violent crimes per 100,000 residents:

• Palm Beach County (MSA) = 458

• New York City (MSA) = 333

• Washington, D.C. (MSA) = 273

MSA stands for Metropolitan Statistical Area. The source for these statistics is Wikipedia, so they must be accurate.

Mar-a-Lago is an epicenter of Trump’s authoritarian regime, behind only the Oval Office and wherever Stephen Miller is at any given moment.

I’ve wondered if I could pull together a strip in response to breaking news. Whether To The Rescue is a good strip or not, it is a strip, and the news just broke. So that answers that.

Usually, I don’t have hopes or ambitions for my strips. This time, however, I do hope someone in Governor Newsom’s press office comes up with the same idea and he announces after this strip is posted, that California National Guard units are on their way to Palm Beach. That would be fun. Even if he’s joking.
