3D Chess?

When I was writing the essay for the previous Sketchier, What Me Worry?, I originally included a litany of all the steps Trump is taking to corrupt, disrupt, or prevent the midterm elections. The list is extensive and quite depressing. And it definitely deserved more attention than burying it in an essay.

That’s how 3D Chess came about. It’s widely reported that even his supporters in Congress think Trump is, well, nuts, but are afraid to veer from the party line. Yet all that Trump has done to undermine democracy doesn’t look like the work of a fool. Instead, it reads like a well-planned cascade of actions with the ultimate goal of taking down democracy.

If Trump is too dumb to plan this out, there are those around him who could. Including that human-shaped cauldron of hatred and cruelty named Stephen Miller.

Fortunately, there’s little that’s subtle about Team Trump. Which means what Mark Elias’s Democracy Docket and others are doing is critical. So is what the millions of Americans who show up for rallies and demonstrations around the country are doing.

Most importantly, those who believe in democracy need to show up on election day regardless of what obstacles Trump and his ilk create. Because their plans are scary, but they aren’t inevitable.
