Good Results

The essay

Off year elections are fun. They’re “real” election nights boiled down to a few, choice items. A curated buffet rather than the Vegas variety. They also are taken as signs and portents of things to come. Sometimes they actually are. Even when they’re not, however, we won’t know for another year. So sure, read into the results. It’s a neater way of predicting the future than reading entrails.

Good Results acknowledges that when one party has a great night, its partisans are entitled to days and weeks of joy and happiness. Unless they’re Democrats. Or at least a certain kind of Democrat—the Debbie and Dennis Downers of politics.

Last night was great news for Democrats. Who’d have predicted that Democrats would win both special elections for Georgia Public Service Commission with 60% of the vote. Yes, in Georgia!!

Still, this time the Downers have a point. The results terrify Trump. Because when you’re a narcissistic, petty, grifter, the last thing you want is an opposition on the rise. You know, opposition that might hold you accountable. And scared wannabe despots have a tendency to do desperate things. Like doing away with pesky elections, or at least fair ones.

Note: I rather like the Orange Orbán reference. It is an insult that benefits from being accurate. I don’t recall having heard it before, but maybe I’ve just forgotten. If I did, then I’d feel bad about feeling good about it. Sigh.
