The essay
Trump doesn’t like it when people disagree or challenge him. He also doesn’t respect the Constitution. In technical political science terminology, this is known as “a bad combination” as evidenced by Trump barring reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House grounds. He’s threatened to add more to the list soon.
Plenty of lawyers — especially those appearing on CNN and MS NOW — are explaining why this is a clear violation of the First Amendment. More significantly, it is a big step forward in Trump’s drive to muzzle dissent. If he can get away with this lock out, it’s only a matter of time before he goes after others who disagree with him, point out his follies, or simply fail to fall in line.
Fortunately, that’s a pretty big list. There’s strength in numbers (which is why you should participate in a No Kings rally on October 17th). That strength will make muzzling his critics harder. What Is There a Lock on the Outside? fantasizes is an alternative that is both simple and satisfying. Instead of locking reporters and others who disagree with Trump out of the White House, lock Trump and his lackeys, cronies, and enablers inside. And all it would take is a few locks on the outside of the White House gates.
Yes, it would be nicer if they were locked up in a federal penitentiary. But we don’t need to be greedy. As long as they’re locked up somewhere, we here at SketchierHQ are happy.
